How we judged these

Four specifications decide whether a whiskey glass suits a particular drinker, and all four are published by the makers rather than guessed at here.

• Does a 2-inch cube fit?

  This is the first question and it disqualifies half the category. A double old fashioned glass at 3.3 inches across takes a big cube; a Glencairn at 66 mm tapering inward does not.

• Published capacity

  A two-ounce pour in an 11 oz glass leaves room for ice and aroma. The same pour in a 200 ml tasting glass fills a third of it, which is what that glass is designed for.

• Dishwasher or hand wash

  Every maker here publishes one or the other, and it decides whether the glasses get used on a Tuesday or only at Christmas. Glencairn publishes dishwasher safe; Marquis by Waterford recommends hand washing.

• Lead free, stated plainly

The two shapes, side by side

How many, and what a set actually has to survive
