How we pick
The evidence behind every 'best' on this site, and the honest limits of it.
Every gift guide in this category says it tested the gear. We haven’t, and we say so. What we do instead is on this page: we read the specifications, count what’s actually in the box, do the arithmetic, and show you the live price with the date we last checked it. You can redo every number yourself.
What every pick is based on
Four things, in this order.
- Manufacturer-published specifications. Capacity in ounces and milliliters, dimensions, weight, materials and gauge, piece counts, what is in the box. Taken from the maker’s own listing, manual or spec sheet, and cited at the bottom of the page it appears on.
- Live retail data. Current price and availability, read at the moment the page renders rather than written into the copy. If we cannot verify a price today, the page shows no number and the button says “check price” instead.
- Arithmetic on the above. The part nobody else in this category publishes. The formulas are written out below.
- What the item does not do. Every pick carries a required “skip this if”, derived from its own specifications. A roundup where every product is excellent has not helped anyone choose.
What our picks are not based on
Stated plainly, because the omissions matter as much as the method:
- We have not physically tested this gear. We do not own it, we have not shaken drinks with it, and we have not been sent samples.
- We publish no star ratings or review counts. Our product data source supplies no rating field, and rather than write a number from memory we publish none at all. You will not find a “4.6 out of 5” anywhere on this site, and nothing here carries review markup.
- No brand pays to appear. Not for a position, not for inclusion, not for a better commission rate.
The five calculations, written out
Every one of these uses inputs the manufacturer publishes, so you can run them yourself on any product we did not cover. Where a maker does not publish an input, we omit the calculation for that product rather than estimating it.

A worked example, so the method is not abstract. A bar cart shelf rated to 65 lb, divided by 2.8 lb per full bottle, is about twenty-three bottles. Another cart, similar in appearance and price, publishes 8.8 lb per shelf — three bottles. That gap is invisible in a photograph and decisive in a living room, and it is the kind of thing this site exists to surface. The full version is in the bar cart comparison.
How a product gets excluded
- The maker publishes no usable specifications. If there is nothing to compare, there is nothing for us to say. This is not a judgment on the product.
- It is not currently sold. A recommendation you cannot act on is not a recommendation.
- Another pick already answers the same question better. We would rather publish four picks that each win something than eight that overlap.
- It only makes sense as an impulse buy. Novelty gear that does one thing badly gets covered in what not to buy instead.
How often this gets re-checked
Prices are re-verified daily and are stamped with the date they were checked. If a price is more than 48 hours old it disappears rather than going stale on the page, which is why buttons sometimes say “check price” instead of showing a number.
The picks themselves are reviewed on a rolling basis and any time a product is discontinued or a specification changes. When the substance of a page changes, its “last updated” date moves. A price refresh does not move it — that would be a false signal, to you and to search engines.
How the money works
The buy buttons are affiliate links. If you buy through one we earn a small commission from the retailer, and you pay exactly the same price. That is the entire business model, and the full disclosure spells it out including the tracking tag we use.
It has one obvious risk, so here is how we handle it: the commission rate never enters the ranking. Where the cheaper option is the better buy, that is the one we recommend, and several picks on this site deliberately point at the less expensive product.

If a specification here is out of date, a calculation is off, or a product has changed, we want to know — it is the fastest way this site gets better. Send it to us and we will correct the page and note the correction with a date, as set out in our editorial policy.
