About Shaker & Sphere

Most cocktail gear writing is aimed at the person who already owns a shaker. This site is aimed at the person standing in front of one, in December, wondering whether the $40 kit is a real gift or a box of pour spouts.

So everything here is organized around the two questions a gift buyer actually has: what can I get for this amount of money, and will they use it. That is why 6 categories run across the site and one of them is nothing but price ceilings.

The one thing we do differently

Every gift guide in this category says it tested the gear. We haven’t, and we say so. What we do instead is published on one page: we read the specifications, count what’s actually in the box, do the arithmetic, and show you the live price with the date we last checked it. You can redo every number yourself.

That sounds weaker than “we tested twenty shakers”, and it is deliberately so. A testing claim is the easiest sentence in the world to write and the hardest for you to verify. A published shelf rating divided by the 2.8 lb weight of a full bottle is checkable on a phone in ten seconds — and it is how we discovered that two similar-looking bar carts at similar prices hold twenty-three bottles and three bottles respectively.

Who writes it

Scooter M. is an enthusiast who's genuinely into this — the gear, the ritual, the small satisfaction of a drink made well at home. He reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math. No lab coat, and no pretending otherwise: he hasn't personally tested the gear on this site, and every pick says exactly what it's based on.

That is the whole byline. No certifications, no bar career, no test lab, and no “our expert panel”. If any of those appeared here they would be invented, and inventing them is exactly the thing this site is trying not to do.

Who publishes it

Shaker & Sphere is published by Slate Mill Group. It is a national publication with no storefront and no phone line — email is the way to reach us, and it is monitored: info@shakerandsphere.com.

How it’s paid for

Affiliate commissions, and nothing else. When you buy through one of our buttons the retailer pays us a small commission and you pay the same price you would have paid anyway. No brand has paid for a placement, a position or a mention, and none ever will — the affiliate disclosure covers the details including the tracking tag.

The obvious conflict is that we get paid more when you spend more. Our defense is structural rather than a promise: commission rates never enter a ranking, and a good number of the picks on this site are the cheaper option, recommended over the expensive one because the specs say so.

Where the site is today

43 guides and roundups across 6 categories, covering 31 products. Every specification is cited to its source, and every pick names someone who should skip it.

If something here is wrong — a spec that has changed, a calculation that is off, a product that has been discontinued — tell us. We correct pages and date the correction, which is set out in the editorial policy.
