The criteria, before the picks

Occasion gifts are judged differently from everyday ones, and the four questions below are the ones that actually separate a good pick from a duplicated one.

• Duplication risk for this occasion

  High at a wedding, near zero at a birthday. A cocktail shaker is the most duplicated barware wedding gift there is, because it is the first thing everyone thinks of.

• Set size against who else is buying

  Guests buy pairs and single objects. That is precisely why a matched set of six is the gap - a couple ends up with two of several things and a complete set of nothing.

• Replaceability in five years

  A wedding gift is kept for decades. A glass from a production line can be replaced when one breaks; a one-off artisan set orphans itself the first time someone drops one.

• Whether it works the day it is opened

  Matters far more for a birthday, where the gift is often used that evening. A present that needs a second purchase before it works is a present that waits.

The wedding problem, stated plainly

A wedding is the only occasion where your gift competes with several dozen others bought in the same week, by people reading the same lists you are.

The result is predictable. The obvious objects arrive in multiples — the shaker, the ice bucket, the novelty decanter — and the unglamorous ones arrive not at all. The couple opens three shakers and no glasses, and the third shaker goes to a charity shop before the thank-you cards are written.

So the useful question is not “what is a good cocktail gift?” It is what will nobody else buy? Two answers hold up:

• Matched sets of six or more. Guests buy in pairs because pairs are cheaper and read as romantic. Almost nobody buys the set that makes a table work.
• The boring, heavily used thing. Everyday tumblers are on no one’s gift list and in every day of a household’s life. How many glasses a household actually needs is a shorter number than people expect and a larger one than they own.

Replaceability, the specification nobody checks

This is the one genuinely technical point on the page, and it only applies to weddings.

The same three things fail at a wedding and a birthday, for different reasons.

• Anything engraved with a date. It cannot be returned, cannot be replaced when it breaks, and forecloses the couple’s own taste.
• A second shaker. At a wedding it is the most likely duplicate in the room. At a birthday it is the most likely thing they already own.
• A set of four. It is too many for a couple’s gift and too few to host with, which is how it ends up as a mismatched pair within two years.
