A cocktail pick is the cheapest thing on this site and the easiest to buy badly, because the only specification that matters is the one most sellers do not print.
Buy on published length, then on steel grade. Four to four and a half inches suits a coupe or a rocks glass; a tall highball needs six inches or more. Buy twelve rather than six, because picks disappear. And if the finish is plated, it is hand wash, always.
How we judged these
Is the length published at all?
This is the gate. A pick that does not span the glass sinks into the drink, and 'long enough to fit most cocktail glasses' is not a measurement.
Published steel grade
18-8 or 304 is a specification. 'Stainless steel' on its own is a description of the color.
Shaft thickness, where published
Two millimeters goes through a firm olive without flexing. Thin picks bend, and a bent pick is a lost pick.
Care instructions
Plain stainless is usually dishwasher safe; plated finishes are hand wash. Half of this category publishes neither.
How many in the set
Twelve, ideally. Picks are lost at roughly the rate of teaspoons, and per-pick price is the honest way to compare sets.
The five, compared
| A Bar Above | Barfly fleur | Viski ring | Cocktail Kingdom | Barfly sword | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 4" (100 mm) | 4 3/8" | 4.25" | 4 in (10.15 cm) | Three figures published |
| Steel | 304 | 18-8 core | 304 | Not published | 18-8 core, gold plated |
| Quantity | 12 | 12 | 6 | 12 | 12 |
| Care published | Dishwasher safe | Listing only | None | Listing only | Hand wash |
| Top | Ball | Fleur-de-lis | Ring | Plain spear | Sword |
The lengths cluster between four and four and a half inches, which tells you what this category is designed for: the short glass. None of these is a skewer for a tall drink, and no amount of decorative top changes that.
The last column is the cautionary tale. The gold sword picks are published at 4.5 inches in the retail title, 4 5/8 inches in the bullets underneath it, and 4 3/8 inches by Mercer itself — three figures for one object. None of them is far enough out to ruin a drink, and all three being published at once is the reason we check makers rather than listings.
Why length decides everything
A pick has one job: hold a garnish where you can reach it. If the pick is shorter than the drink is deep, the garnish ends up submerged and you are fishing in a full glass with your fingers.
Four inches is comfortable across the mouth of a coupe or resting in a rocks glass. It is also roughly the depth of a double old fashioned glass, so an olive on a four-inch pick sits at the surface rather than on the bottom. In a 16 oz highball or a collins glass — both a good deal taller than they are wide — the same pick vanishes.
So match the pick to the glass you actually use. Martini and coupe drinkers are well served by everything on this page; highball drinkers should be looking for something longer, and should treat a four-inch pick as a cheese-board accessory rather than a bar tool.
Plated picks and the hand-wash rule
Gold and copper picks are plating over steel, exactly like the rest of the gold bar tools, and the rule that applies there applies here: plated finishes are hand wash, and Mercer says so explicitly while warning against bleach-based detergents.
That matters more on picks than on a shaker, because picks are small, numerous and exactly the sort of thing that gets swept into a dishwasher basket at the end of an evening. If the household will not hand wash twelve small objects, buy the plain stainless sets and put the money into the glassware instead.
Which set to buy
Buy the A Bar Above set if you want the one that is properly documented: 304 stainless, four inches, a 2 mm shaft that will not bend through an olive, and the only published dishwasher-safe claim here.
Buy the Barfly fleur-de-lis set for the best price per pick from a brand that supplies working bars, with the length published on Mercer’s own page rather than guessed at.
Buy the Viski ring picks if you fish garnishes out of full glasses often. A ring gives a wet finger something to hook, which sounds trivial until you have tried to pinch a slippery steel spear.
Buy the Cocktail Kingdom pack for plain, cheap and twelve. Accept that the steel grade is not published and that the maker’s own store shows it sold out, which makes the retail listing the only route to it.
Buy the gold swords only if the bar is already gold and someone is going to enjoy them. Gifts for martini drinkers is the page for the rest of that present, since picks are the classic small addition to a glass set.
One last piece of advice that costs nothing: if you entertain at all, own two sets. Keep the plain stainless twelve-pack in the drawer for drinks and let the decorative set live with the cheese board, because the board is where picks go to disappear. Two twelve-packs together still cost less than a single bottle of decent gin, and it is the only way we know to still have picks in a year.
Pick length against the glasses you own
The specifications on this site make the length question concrete. Using published dimensions for glassware we already cover:
| Glass | Published height | Does a 4 in pick work? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Libbey rocks / double old fashioned | 4.2" tall | Yes - rests on the rim | |
| Riedel Nick & Nora | 6.02" tall | Yes - the bowl is shallow | |
| Libbey Kentfield martini | 7.68" tall | Yes - stemmed, shallow bowl | |
| Libbey Polaris tumbler | 6.3" tall | Marginal - deep and straight-sided | |
| Libbey tiki bamboo highball | 6.75" tall | No - the pick disappears |
The pattern is about depth rather than height. A stemmed glass is tall but its bowl is shallow, so a four-inch pick lies across it perfectly. A straight-sided tumbler is deep all the way down, and that is where a short pick sinks — garnish, pick and all.
So the rule is simpler than the table: picks for stemmed and short glasses, skewers for tall ones. If most of your drinking is highballs, these sets are for the olives on the cheese board rather than for the drink.
What else goes on a pick
Olives and cocktail onions are the obvious ones — a Gibson is a martini with an onion on a pick, and nothing else changes. Beyond that:
- Cherries. A Manhattan or an Old Fashioned with a good cherry is improved by getting it out of the drink cleanly, which is exactly what a pick does and a cocktail stick does badly.
- Citrus peel. A twist that will not sit on the rim can be folded onto a pick and laid across the glass, which also keeps the oils where you want them.
- Anything on a board. Cheese, charcuterie, cornichons. This is where a twelve-pack earns its keep and where the picks quietly go missing.
One technique note: if you are spearing three olives at once, shaft thickness matters more than length. A 2 mm shaft goes through a firm olive; a thin decorative pick bends, and a bent pick is on its way to the bin.

1. Best documented
A Bar Above Stainless Steel Cocktail Picks, 4 in, Set of 12
A Bar Above · best for the set whose maker publishes the shaft thickness and the dishwasher rule
Four inches of 304 stainless with a 2 mm shaft and a ball top, and a maker that publishes both the metric length and an explicit dishwasher-safe statement. It is the most completely documented pick set we found.
Published specs
- Length
- 4" (100 mm), published in both places
- Material
- 304 stainless steel
- Shaft
- 2 mm, with reinforced welds
- Top
- 8 mm ball
- Quantity
- 12
- Care
- Dishwasher safe for home and commercial machines, per the maker
What’s good
- The only set here whose maker publishes an unambiguous dishwasher-safe claim
- A 2 mm shaft is thick enough not to bend when it goes through a firm olive
- Length published in inches and millimeters, which removes any doubt about what arrives
What’s not
- Four inches is the shortest set on this page - fine for a coupe, marginal in a tall glass
- The retail listing's bullets describe long picks as well, which does not match this ASIN
- A plain ball top is practical rather than decorative, so it is a poor gift on its own

Someone buying picks as the present. This is the working set; the plated and decorative ones look better in a box.

2. Best value for twelve
Barfly Fleur De Lis Cocktail Picks, Stainless Steel, Set of 12 (M37208)
Barfly by Mercer Culinary · best for twelve picks that will outlast the drinks, at about a dollar each
An 18-8 stainless core, a decorative top and a published 4 3/8 inch length. Twelve in a set is the number that survives a party where half of them end up in the dishwasher basket.
Published specs
- Length
- 4 3/8" overall, published by Mercer
- Material
- 18-8 stainless steel core construction
- Quantity
- 12
- Top
- Fleur-de-lis
- Care
- The retail listing says hand washing is recommended but stainless products are dishwasher safe; Mercer publishes no care text for this item
- Model
- M37208
The math
- Cost per pick: About a dollar
- Twelve picks in a set at the price of a single cocktail out. Picks get lost the way teaspoons do, so the per-pick number matters more than the headline price.
What’s good
- Mercer publishes the overall length, which most sellers in this category never do
- 18-8 stainless core is published rather than left as 'stainless'
- Twelve picks covers a table and absorbs the ones that disappear
What’s not
- The retail listing publishes no length at all - the figure comes from Mercer's own page
- 4 3/8 inches is fine in a coupe or rocks glass and short in a tall highball
- A decorative top is a matter of taste, and this one is firmly traditional
Skip this if
Tall drinks. If the garnish has to reach the bottom of a 16 oz highball, buy a longer pick rather than a prettier one.

3. Easiest to pull out of a full glass
Viski Stainless Steel Cocktail Picks, Ring Top, Set of 6
Viski · best for a slightly longer pick with a top that is easy to pull out of a full glass
Four and a quarter inches of 304 stainless with a small ring at the top. The ring is the useful part: it gives a wet finger something to hook rather than pinch.
Published specs
- Length
- 4.25", published in both places
- Material
- 304 stainless steel, high-shine finish
- Top
- Ring
- Quantity
- 6
- Care
- Not published by the maker or the listing
- Model
- 4360
What’s good
- A ring top is genuinely easier to lift out of a full glass than a ball or a spear
- Length agrees between the maker and the listing, which is rarer here than it should be
- Currently sells for meaningfully less than Viski's own list price
What’s not
- Six picks rather than twelve, so the per-pick price is the highest of the stainless sets
- Neither Viski nor the listing publishes any care instruction
- High-shine finishes show water spots, which matters on an object pulled out of drinks
Skip this if
A party. Six picks disappear quickly; the twelve-packs are the ones to own for a crowd.

4. The plain bar pick
Cocktail Kingdom Cocktail Picks, Stainless Steel, Pack of 12
Cocktail Kingdom · best for the plain bar pick, from the brand that supplies a lot of the bars you like
A plain spear with a small ball, twelve to a pack, at the lowest price here. Cocktail Kingdom publishes the length on its own site even though the retail listing settles for 'long enough to fit most cocktail glasses'.
Published specs
- Length
- 4 in (10.15 cm), published by Cocktail Kingdom
- Material
- Stainless steel (grade not published)
- Quantity
- 12
- Top
- Plain spear with a small ball
- Care
- The retail listing says dishwasher safe; the maker publishes no care text
What’s good
- The lowest price per pick of any named brand on this page
- Plain and unfussy, which is what a garnish pick should be when the drink is the point
- Cocktail Kingdom publishes the length in both inches and centimeters
What’s not
- The steel grade is not published anywhere, unlike the Barfly and A Bar Above sets
- Cocktail Kingdom's own store lists it as sold out, so the retail listing is the only reliable source
- Four inches again - short for a highball
Skip this if
Anyone who wants the pick to be decorative. This is deliberately plain, and the fleur-de-lis or sword tops exist for the other job.

5. Best for a gold bar
Barfly Sword Cocktail Picks, Gold Plated, Set of 12 (M37065GD)
Barfly by Mercer Culinary · best for the picks bought to be seen, on a bar where the rest of the tools are gold
Sword tops in gold plating over an 18-8 stainless core. They are the gift version of a cocktail pick, with the plated-finish rule that comes with every gold bar tool: hand wash.
Published specs
- Length
- Published three ways - 4.5" in the retail title, 4 5/8" in its bullets, 4 3/8" by Mercer
- Material
- Gold plating over an 18-8 stainless core
- Quantity
- 12
- Top
- Sword
- Care
- Hand wash; avoid detergents containing bleach
- Model
- M37065GD
What’s good
- Sword picks are the one garnish accessory guests reliably comment on
- Gold plating over a published 18-8 core rather than over unspecified metal
- Matches the rest of the plated Barfly range if the bar already has a finish
What’s not
- Three different published lengths across two pages, which is careless on a 12-pack of identical objects
- Hand wash only, like every plated bar tool, and these are small things to wash by hand
- Costs more than the plain stainless sets for a finish rather than a function
